Business Durham is the economic development organisation for County Durham overseeing a total of £3.4 billion planned investment and 305 hectares of land allocated for strategic and general employment development with 25,992 new homes by 2035. 

3,400 businesses have relocated, set up or expanded in Durham in the last four years and 40 multinationals have invested and re-invested in the county in the last three years.  Long established companies include GSK, Thorn Lighting and Husqvarna and technology trailblazers include Atom bank, Kromek and PolyPhotonix.

More than 100,000 new jobs will be created by 2024 and the development of the central Aykley Heads strategic employment site, close to Durham City’s UNESCO World Heritage Site and mainline trainline, will see an investment of £400 million creating up to 6000 private sector jobs.

Durham University is a Worldwide Top 100 university and consistently in the top 10 universities in the UK and plays an important part in the county with planned capital investment totalling over £1 billion up to 2027.  

The county is home to NETPark, the North East’s only Science and Innovation Park and with partners Durham University and CPI, already has over 40 businesses and 500 people employed in high-value science and technology sectors with extensive sites to support 3000 new jobs in the next 20 years.
